Internet Explorer for Macintosh

 

IE 4.5 - Mac - Home Page Setup

  1. Your home page is the page that is displayed every time you launch Internet Explorer. You have the option of changing the default page if you wish. Make sure the home page is a page that you want to view each time you open your browser.

  2. To change the home page:

  3. Select the Preferences option from the Edit menu.

  4. Select Web Browser and then click Home/Search.

  5. In the Address box, type the new home page address.

To display your home page whenever you open a new window, select the Automatically go to this home page when opening a new window check box.

Tips:

To quickly set the current page as the home page, open the page in the browser, hold down the mouse button, and then the select the Set Home Page option from the Shortcut menu.

To use the default home page for Internet Explorer (http://www.olobahn.net), click the Use Default button.

To have no home page, click the Use None button. This causes the Home button on the Button Bar and the Home Page command on the Go menu to be unavailable.

If you are familiar with authoring web pages, try creating your own home page with links to your favorite topics.

 

IE 5.x - Mac - Home Page Setup

  3. Open Internet Explorer, and select the Preferences option from the Edit menu.

  4. Select Web Browser, and then click Browser Display.

  5. Under the Home Page heading, in the Address box, type the desired home page address.

To display your home page whenever you open a new window, select the Automatically go to this home page when opening a new window check box.


Outlook Express for Macintosh

 

Outlook Express 4.5 - Mac - Setup

To setup Outlook Express 4.5 on a Mac:

  1. In Outlook Express, choose Preferences from the Edit menu.
  2. Under Accounts, click E-mail.
  3. Click New Account.

  1. Type a name for your mail account. This name will be used to identify the account in the folder list and in any menus.
  2. Select Account Type: POP.
  3. Click the OK button. Your mail account will now appear in the Mail Accounts menu and in the Account Name field at the bottom.

  1. In the Full Name box, type your first and last name.
  2. In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail address in the format username@yourisp.xxx.
  3. In the Organization box, type your company or group name if applicable.
  4. In the SMTP Server box, type smtp.yourisp.xxx.
  5. In the Account ID box, type your username.
  6. In the POP Server box, type pop.yourisp.xxx.
  7. If you do not wish to supply your password each time you check for incoming mail, select the Save Password check box and then type the password for your mail account. If you have forgotten your password, or wish to change it, visit your Broadband Providers Support page.
  8. If you want make this your default account for sending mail messages and posting to newsgroups, click the Make Default button. When you create a message, you can use the Mail From menu to change the account from which send the message. However, your default mail account will always be used to post to newsgroups.
  9. Click the OK button.

Outlook Express 5.x - Mac - Setup

To setup Outlook Express:

1.

In Outlook Express, select the Accounts option from the Tools menu.

Click the New button. Please note, that if you use Outlook Express 5.02 or higher, the following image will appear first:

Press the Assist Me button to proceed.

The Account Setup Assistant will appear, and will prompt you to select a name for your e-mail account. This name will be used to identify the account in the folder list and in any menus. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the window to proceed to the next step.

Select the I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use radio button option and enter your e-mail address in the box below. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the window to proceed to the next step.

Enter your POP and SMTP server settings in the labeled boxes (pop.x.x and smtp.x.x, respectively) and click the right arrow at the bottom of the window to proceed to the next step.

Enter your username in the Account ID: box and your password in the Password box. If you do not wish to supply your password each time you check for incoming mail, select the Save Password check box and then type the password for your mail account in the Password box. If you have forgotten your password, or wish to change it, visit your Broadband Providers Support page. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the window to move to the next step.

Enter an Account Name in the box, and place a check mark in the Include this account in my "Send & Receive All" schedule box. Click the Finish button. Your email account should now be configured properly.

 


TCP/IP SETUP

1.         Click the Apple in the upper-left hand side of the screen.

2.         Choose “Control Panel,” then choose “TCP / IP.”  The following screen appears

3.         If you need to get the MAC Address.  Do an APPLE KEY---I

4.         Make sure your screen matches the one above.  If so, click on the square button in the upper-left hand corner and      save your changes.

5.         Open Internet Explorer to get onto the net.


SYSTEM INFORMATION

 

Mac - Checking for Built-in Ethernet

To check your Macintosh for built-in Ethernet:

  1. Refer to the user manual for information about the the type, if any, of built-in Ethernet connection available on your Macintosh.
  2. Refer to the image below, which displays the rear view of a Macintosh, to visually determine if your computer has built-in Ethernet and the type of connection available.

Note: Many Macintosh clone computers feature network interfaces that can function properly with your Broadband Provider. However, Power Computing clones often exhibit unpredictable results with built-in Ethernet. To enable access for most Broadband Providers from machines with this issue, installation of a network interface card is required.

Mac - Checking for Free Hard Drive Space

To check your Macintosh for free hard drive space:

  1. Select Icons from the View menu.
  2. Double-click the Hard Drive icon on your desktop.
  3. The number of items and the amount of free space on your hard drive will display below the title bar. Verify that at least the minimum of hard drive space required by for Broadband Provider.

 

Mac - Checking MAC Address

To determine the MAC address of an installed Ethernet card on a Macintosh:

  1. Select Control Panels from the Apple menu, and then select TCP/IP.
  2. Click the Info button (if the Info button does not appear, select User Mode from the Edit menu, and then select Advanced).
  3. A window will display similar to the sample below showing the hardware address. Make a note of the hardware address and click the OK button.

  4. If you need to change the computer you are using with your cable modem, contact your Broadband Providers Technical Support.

Mac - Checking Processor Type and Speed

Please check with your Broadband Provider to what actual system requirements they require you to have.  System requirements vary from provider to provider.

  1. In the upper right corner, make sure that the Finder icon is selected. If it is not, click on the current icon, and select the Finder icon from the list.
  2. Select Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu.
  3. The Apple System Profiler window will open, listing the system specifications of your Apple computer. Towards the bottom of the window, Processor Info and Machine Speed will be displayed. These two options will give you the information needed to determine if your machine falls within your Broadband Providers minimum requirements.

Note: According to Apple, a small number of computers exhibit known component issues that may cause system freezing in ALL Power Macintosh and Performa 5200, 5300, 6200, and 6300 series computers. If you own, or are thinking of purchasing one of these machines, it is necessary for you to carefully review information published by Apple before your Broadband Provider can install service on these computers.

Mac - Checking RAM and OS Version

To check your Macintosh's RAM and OS version:

  1. Select About this Mac from the Apple menu to display system information. A window will display similar to the sample below:

  1. The number for Built-in Memory represents the actual amount of physical RAM. Verify that the number shown for your system is 24576 or greater.
  2. Verify that the version of Mac OS is 7.6 or greater. (Our sample displays 8.0).

Mac - Release IP

If you experience problems connecting to your Broadband Provider, the lease on your IP address may have expired, but your computer may not yet have released the expired IP and obtained a new one.

To release and renew your IP address:

  • Restart your Macintosh.

OR

  1. Select Control Panels from the Apple menu and then select TCP/IP.
  2. In the TCP/IP window, click the Options button.
  3. In the TCP/IP Options window, click the Inactive radio button to make TCP/IP inactive and click the OK button.
  4. Wait two minutes for the timers to release the current TCP/IP sessions.
  5. Select Control Panels from the Apple menu and then select TCP/IP.
  6. In the TCP/IP window, click the Options button.
  7. In the TCP/IP Options window, click the Active radio button to make TCP/IP active and click the OK button.
  8. Exit the TCP/IP window.

Note: If the Options button is not visible in the lower right corner of your TCP/IP menu, select Edit Menu and change the User Mode to Advanced or Administrative.

When the TCP/IP stack becomes active again, the DHCP server will be contacted for configuration information and a new IP address will be obtained.
