WIN 95 / WIN 98 / WIN Me NETWORK SETUP

To setup a Windows 95/98/Me computer to utilize Broadband Internet Service, follow the step’s below.

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel  (As below)

Next, Select Network, and the screen below will appear:

Network Properties

Listed in here are the components currently installed on the particular computer.  Items that may appear are Client, Adapter, Protocol, and Service.

Next, Select the TCP/IP protocol or TCP/IP->Ethernet Card

Ensure that this is set on Obtain an IP Address Automatically

Next, Select the WINS Configuration Tab, the screen below will appear:

Use DHCP Must be enabled for Most Broadband Provider to work properly

Next, Select the Gateway Tab, The following screen will appear:

Gateway

The New Gateway and Installed Gateway’s must be blank

Next, Select the DNS Configuration Tab, The following screen will appear:

Disable DNS must also be checked

Once all these settings appear the same as the picture-> click ok(If it ask’s for the Windows CD use the following rule)

(a) If you added TCP/IP or any other item’s listed in figure 2 insert the Windows CD and follow the screen prompts

(b) If you did not add anything in figure 2, click cancel and follow the screen prompts.

Once you have followed all these steps listed above, make one final check of the connections to the Cable Modem and the Network Interface Card.  Ensuring you have a Link Lite on both the Modem and NIC.  And restart the computer when prompted.

After the computer has rebooted, run the following command by going to:  Start->Run->

Run Dialog Box

Type in the above word and click ok

The box below will appear:

IP Configuration

 

 

 

 

 

This is the IP Configuration window.  Listed in the white box will be all adapters installed on the computer that have a TCP/IP Entry.  This will also display the Adapter Address(MAC Address) needed to allow the computer on Knology Networks.

 

The IP Address is the next focus, use the guide below to better understand this field:

 

169.x.x.x  Adapter Default Address   (No Network Present/Active)

149.x.x.x  Network Interface Card is communicating with Modem  (No Network Active)

192.168.x.x  Network Interface Card is communicating with Modem  (No Network Active)

71.x.x.x or 68.x.x.x  Network Interface Card has pulled an IP Address and is Online

 

The other fields above will populate once an IP Address is pulled
