Home Networking
Most
cable modem services
are designed to run on a single computer.
Most Broadband Providers
do not provide any service or support for home networking.
You may, however, set up multiple computers behind your cable modem to share
your internet connection. If you decide to setup a home network, the
information below will give you a good start.
You
can create a home network through hardware or software. Both approaches
have strengths and weaknesses as outlined below.
Hardware:
A router/hub
connects to the network between the cable modem and the computers.
Strengths:
·
Does
not slow down computer processor.
·
Can
easily connect multiple computers.
·
Most
have a built in firewall which provides an extra layer of protection from
hackers.
Weaknesses:
·
More
expensive than software solution.
Software:
A software that is run on one of the computers in the network to make your
computer act like a router/hub. The program typically does network address
translation (NAT) using an additional Ethernet adapter.
Strengths:
·
It
can be less expensive than the hardware solution.
·
It
is a simple solution to connect two computers together.
Weaknesses:
·
It
uses up some of your computer's processor power to run.
·
It
can get increasingly difficult to connect more than two computers. Requires
multiple network adapter cards installed in routing computer.
·
Usually
does not have a built in firewall.
Generally
speaking a hardware solution will provide smoother installation and ease of use,
but at a greater price. We have provided a list of resources below that
will help you to install a home network.
